Kolkata Metro's Green Line, connecting Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector V, faced a service disruption less than a month after its full operation. A technical glitch in the power supply lines caused temporary suspension of services, affecting major stations including Howrah, Sealdah, and Esplanade. Maintenance teams restored partial service within an hour and full operations by early afternoon. The incident highlights the operational challenges faced by newly launched metro lines, particularly during busy periods with limited alternative transport options, such as festivals or public holidays.
Kolkata Metro's Green Line, a 16.6-km stretch from Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector V, became fully operational after its Esplanade-Sealdah section was inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in late August. Less than a month later, the line experienced a disruption due to a technical glitch in the power supply lines, which was detected around 10:34 AM. This led to suspension of services in both directions.
Maintenance teams immediately attended to the issue, and services on the Howrah Maidan-Sealdah section resumed by 11:46 AM. The entire line, extending to Salt Lake Sector V, was back in operation by 1:00 PM. Officials did not disclose further details about the cause of the glitch.
The disruption caused large crowds at key stations, including Howrah, Sealdah, and Esplanade. With fewer buses, taxis, and auto-rickshaws available on the roads due to Vishwakarma Puja, commuters faced significant inconvenience. While technical snags are more common on the older Blue Line, this was one of the first major issues affecting the recently launched Green Line.
This incident emphasizes the technical and operational challenges faced by new metro services. Ensuring consistent service requires careful maintenance, monitoring of power and infrastructure systems, and readiness to respond quickly to unexpected glitches, especially during periods of high commuter demand.
