The Sarai Kale Khan station on the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System is expected to be inaugurated on 17 September. It will become the capital's first fully integrated multimodal interchange hub, linking services like Metro, city buses, interstate buses, and Indian Railways. The station is 215 metres long, 50 metres wide and 15 metres high, and has been built with six platforms and four tracks. With trial runs complete, travel between Sarai Kale Khan and Meerut will take less than an hour. The project is part of the Make in India initiative and aims to increase public transport's share on this corridor.
The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) is preparing to open Sarai Kale Khan station on the Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor on 17 September. This station is the last pending station on the 82.15-kilometre RRTS line between Delhi and Meerut and is designed to serve as a major transit hub.
Sarai Kale Khan station will have six platforms and four train tracks. The station building is 215 metres long, 50 metres wide and 15 metres high. It includes 14 lifts and 18 escalators. A 280-metre foot overbridge with six travelators will connect it to the nearby Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station. Outside, there is a plaza and a drop-off / pick-up area for over 40 vehicles underneath the station box.
The hub will link multiple modes of transport: RRTS trains, Metro (Pink Line), city buses, the Veer Haqeeqat Rai Inter-State Bus Terminal, and Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station. Pedestrian pathways have been arranged to help commuters shift between modes without going onto busy roads.
Trial runs for the stretch between Sarai Kale Khan and Modipuram have already been completed. Once the Sarai Kale Khan-New Ashok Nagar section is operational, travel time between Sarai Kale Khan and Meerut will drop to below one hour with stops at all stations.
The Delhi-Meerut RRTS is part of a larger plan to build a 3-corridor network covering Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut, Delhi-Gurugram-SNB-Alwar, and Delhi-Panipat. The aim is to provide fast regional connectivity across the National Capital Region. Each corridor is designed for speeds of up to 180 km/h, with operational speeds around 160 km/h, making it faster than existing metro networks.
This entire RRTS project, valued at over INR 30,000 crore, seeks to shift public transport's usage on the Delhi-Meerut route from about 37% to 63%. All train sets are designed in Hyderabad and manufactured in Gujarat, under the Make in India initiative.
Features have been added for women's safety, including designated coaches and station controllers, as well as surveillance systems. The station has been planned for ease of use, including universal access for pedestrians.
