Kandla Port, under the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), is set to extend its operations outside Gujarat for the first time, with plans to manage terminals in Maharashtra and Karnataka. This move aims to replicate Kandla's operational efficiency, reduce congestion at other ports, and increase cargo throughput. The expansion will begin with terminal management and could grow into full port operations, involving both government and private ports. Kandla Port handled more than 150 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo last year, primarily petroleum, oil, and lubricants. To support rising volumes, DPA is constructing a deep-draft multi-cargo berth and a new container terminal, expected to be operational by September 2027.
Kandla Port, managed by the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), is preparing to expand its operations beyond Gujarat, marking a notable step in India's maritime sector. Authorities are in talks to manage key terminals in Maharashtra and Karnataka, with the goal of applying Kandla's operational efficiency to other regions. The expansion is expected to start with terminal management and may eventually extend to full port operations.
In the previous year, Kandla Port handled more than 150 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo. Roughly 60% of this volume consisted of petroleum, oil, and lubricants, while the rest included timber, salt, food grains, edible oils, chemicals, and containerized exports. To manage growing cargo volumes, DPA is developing a deep-draft multi-cargo berth capable of handling 18 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) for dry bulk, project cargo, and break-bulk cargo. Alongside this, a new container terminal with a capacity of 2.3 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) is being built through a public-private partnership, with operations expected to begin by September 2027.
This expansion is part of wider efforts to strengthen infrastructure, streamline port operations, and support India's export and trade ecosystem. By extending Kandla Port's reach beyond Gujarat, the authority aims to address congestion in regional ports, improve overall cargo handling efficiency, and support growing trade demands.
