Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation for multiple projects worth more than INR 9,000 crore in Mizoram, including the first railway line connecting Aizawl to India's national railway network. The Bairabi-Sairang rail line, covering 51.38 kilometres and built at a cost of about INR 8,070 crore, was the most significant among them. He also launched new train services, key road and bridge projects, educational institutions, an LPG bottling plant, and a sports facility. These developments are expected to enhance connectivity, improve public services, and open economic opportunities across the state.
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi launched and inaugurated projects worth more than INR 9,000 crore in Mizoram. The event was scheduled to be held at Lammual Ground in Aizawl, but due to heavy rain and bad weather, the Prime Minister addressed the gathering virtually from Lengpui Airport.
The most important project among those launched was the Bairabi-Sairang railway line, a 51.38-kilometre stretch that connects Aizawl to India's railway network for the first time. This project, developed at an estimated cost of INR 8,070 crore, includes 45 tunnels, 55 major bridges, and 88 minor bridges across difficult hilly terrain. With this addition, Mizoram's capital is now part of the Indian railway map, a step that has been awaited for decades.
Along with the railway line, the Prime Minister also flagged off three train services. These include the Sairang-Anand Vihar (Delhi) Rajdhani Express, which will run once a week, the Kolkata-Sairang-Kolkata Express, to operate three times a week, and the Guwahati-Sairang-Guwahati Express, which will run daily. These services are expected to make travel easier and strengthen links between Mizoram and major cities.
Road and bridge projects also formed a key part of the announcements. The Aizawl Bypass Road, stretching 45 kilometres and being developed under the PM-DevINE scheme, is aimed at reducing congestion in Aizawl city. In addition, the Thenzawl-Sialsuk Road and the Khankawn-Rongura Road are expected to improve regional connectivity. The Chhimtuipui River Bridge on the Lawngtlai-Siaha road was also inaugurated, providing all-weather connectivity and helping cut travel time by around two hours.
In the education sector, a new Eklavya Model Residential School at Tlangnuam and a Residential School in Kawrthah under the PMJVK scheme were inaugurated. These institutions are designed to support children from tribal and minority communities, and officials said more than 10,000 students are likely to benefit from them in the coming years.
Other important projects included the inauguration of a 30 TMTPA LPG bottling plant at Mualkhang in Aizawl. This facility is expected to improve the supply of clean cooking fuel while also generating employment in the state. A Khelo India Multipurpose Indoor Hall was also inaugurated in Tuikual, which will provide better training and sporting facilities for young athletes.
The projects announced are also in line with India's Act East Policy, aimed at strengthening trade and connectivity in the North-East and linking it with Southeast Asia. The Prime Minister highlighted that ongoing initiatives such as the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit project and the Sairang-Hmawngbuchhuah railway line would further improve Mizoram's access to the Bay of Bengal, opening up opportunities for trade and tourism.
