Adani Enterprises Ltd (AEL), the flagship firm of the Gautam Adani-led group, has secured a contract to construct a 12.9-km ropeway linking Sonprayag with Kedarnath in Uttarakhand. Approved by the Union cabinet earlier this year, the INR 4,081 crore project aims to provide pilgrims with a safer, faster, and environmentally friendly alternative to the traditional 16-km uphill trek. The ropeway, expected to carry 1,800 passengers per hour in each direction, will form part of the National Ropeways Development Programme and is anticipated to boost tourism, create jobs, and enhance regional connectivity.
Adani Enterprises Ltd (AEL) has been awarded the contract for the prestigious ropeway project connecting Sonprayag, the last road-accessible point for Kedarnath pilgrims, to Kedarnath itself. The announcement was made by the company earlier this week, with construction to be undertaken by AEL's Roads, Metro, Rail, and Water (RMRW) division.
Spanning 12.9 kilometres, the ropeway will replace the traditionally strenuous 16-km trek, reducing travel time from nine hours to just 36 minutes. Capable of transporting 1,800 passengers per hour per direction, the system is designed to serve lakhs of pilgrims annually. The project forms part of the National Ropeways Development Programme - Parvatmala Pariyojana - and will be developed on a Public-Private Partnership basis, with AEL operating it for 29 years post-construction.
The ropeway may employ advanced Tri-cable Detachable Gondola (3S) technology, allowing a daily capacity of up to 18,000 passengers. The initiative is expected to create employment opportunities, enhance tourism, and provide a modern, reliable, and environmentally sustainable transport option for devotees. Gautam Adani stated that the project represents a bridge between devotion and modern infrastructure, emphasising that it will make the sacred journey safer, faster, and more accessible while generating economic benefits for the local community.
The Kedarnath temple, situated at 3,583 metres in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district, is one of the 12 revered Jyotirlingas and draws nearly 20 lakh pilgrims annually during its six to seven months of annual accessibility.
By dramatically reducing travel time and increasing safety, it will transform the Kedarnath pilgrimage while simultaneously creating jobs and encouraging tourism in the region. Beyond its logistical benefits, the project underscores the role of private-public partnerships in developing sustainable and community-focused infrastructure. With AEL at the helm, the initiative reflects a long-term commitment to enhancing regional connectivity and improving the experience of millions of devotees.
