The Goa government has approved a plan to redevelop the Mapusa bus stand through a public-private partnership at an estimated cost of about INR 192 crore. Spanning over 27,000 square metres, the project will include more than 700 parking slots, air-conditioned waiting lounges with WiFi, automatic ticket machines, restaurants and other passenger amenities. The development will follow a design-build-finance-operate-transfer model with phased timelines for core transport and commercial components.
The Goa state government has cleared a proposal to revamp the long-awaited Mapusa bus stand under a public-private partnership, with an investment of roughly INR 192 crore. Planned over an area exceeding 27,000 sqm, the facility will feature parking space for more than 700 vehicles, including nearly 500 two-wheelers, around 200 four-wheelers and additional staff parking bays.
The redevelopment plan includes two air-conditioned waiting lounges with WiFi connectivity, a cargo facility, a restaurant, and a ticketing area equipped with automatic vending machines. Passenger amenities will also comprise gender-segregated washrooms, baby feeding rooms, drinking water points, a help desk catering to multiple transport modes, wheelchair access, luggage trolleys and ATMs.
Developed on a design, build, finance, operate and transfer (DBFOT) model, the new bus stand will serve services operated by the state transport corporation, private bus operators and other agencies. It will also incorporate bus bays, departure and halting areas, along with other supporting infrastructure. Commercial facilities such as a business complex and bus port amenities will be developed as per local bye-laws and zoning norms to ensure viability. The selected concessionaire will be required to complete the core bus station infrastructure within 24 months from the appointed date and the commercial complex within 36 months.
The planned mix of modern facilities and commercial elements aims to enhance commuter convenience while ensuring operational and financial sustainability. If completed within schedule, the project could resolve longstanding concerns about inadequate amenities and maintenance, setting a benchmark for future transport hub developments across the state.
