The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has signed a key agreement with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) to execute track works for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor. This contract covers the design, supply, construction, testing, and commissioning of a 157 km section from Mumbai to Zaroli village, including four stations and a rolling stock depot at Thane. Progress in Maharashtra is advancing with elevated viaducts, pre-stressed concrete box girders, tunnels, and steel bridges, reflecting coordinated efforts to meet the project's ambitious timelines.
The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has formalized a contract with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) for the comprehensive execution of track works on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor. Under this agreement, L&T will be responsible for the design, supply, construction, testing, and commissioning of the track over a 157 km stretch from Mumbai to Zaroli village, located at the Maharashtra-Gujarat border. The project also includes the construction of four stations and a rolling stock depot at Thane.
Work in the Maharashtra section covers 156 km, with 135 km set for elevated alignment between Shilphata and Zaroli village. Out of this, 103 km will use 2,575 full span pre-stressed concrete (PSC) box girders, each weighing around 970 metric tonnes. Additionally, the project involves 17 km of segmental girders, 2.3 km of steel bridges, and seven tunnels totaling approximately 6 km. Construction activities at elevated stations in Thane, Virar, and Boisar are underway, including initial slab casting at Virar and Boisar. So far, about 48 km of piers have been completed, and excavation for the seven mountain tunnels in Palghar district has begun, with 2.1 km already excavated.
To maintain pace, 13 casting yards have been established along the alignment, of which five are operational. The construction approach in Maharashtra mirrors the successful methods used in Gujarat since April 2021, where 319 km of viaducts have already been completed. A key milestone has been achieved with the launching of the first full span PSC box girder of 40 meters at Sakhare village in Dahanu, demonstrating the coordinated progress across multiple construction fronts.
The project remains on track with focused execution strategies that include continuous casting and assembly of pre-stressed girders, timely excavation of tunnels, and erection of elevated viaducts. These measures are crucial to ensuring the high-speed rail corridor meets the planned operational targets and enhances connectivity between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
