Haryana has crossed 2.1 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity and is adding rooftop solar across homes, industries, and institutions. The state has distributed more than 1.65 lakh solar irrigation pumps under the PM-KUSUM scheme, helping farmers save costs while lowering emissions. Haryana has also built a 10 MW solar plant in Panipat, developed over 448 MW of ground-mounted projects, sanctioned 13 solar parks, and declared Panchkula as a Model Solar City. With discussions for a potential INR 1,000 crore investment from the Philippines, Haryana is seeking to expand decentralized energy solutions in villages, aligning with India's wider renewable energy and climate goals.
Haryana's Energy Minister Anil Vij said that the state has installed more than 2.1 GW of solar capacity and is steadily increasing rooftop solar adoption in residential, industrial, and institutional sectors. He added that more than 1.65 lakh solar irrigation pumps have been given to farmers under the PM-KUSUM scheme, which is lowering their operating costs and reducing carbon emissions.
The minister highlighted that India has set clear renewable targets, including 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030, meeting 50 % of the nation's energy needs through renewables, reducing projected carbon emissions by 1 billion tonnes, and cutting carbon intensity by 45 % compared to 2005 levels. He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of India as a developed nation by 2047 places green energy at the centre, with the larger goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
In Ambala, Vij met a high-level delegation that included Jenny Lin Granados Maano, co-founder and president of Sunsmart Solar Power Technology Inc. from the Philippines, and Dr Kabir KV, CEO of UAE-based company ANPM. He underlined that international cooperation through exchange of scientific knowledge and best practices is essential for progress.
Vij referred to the Philippines' model where electricity is produced locally on each of its 7,641 islands, as a single-grid system is not feasible there. He said Haryana will examine this approach and expressed hope that the Philippines would invest INR 1,000 crore in the state for developing similar decentralized solar solutions in villages.
On this occasion, Jenny Lin Granados Maano gave a presentation covering green energy, expansion of solar power systems, climate change, ecology and environment, sustainability, intelligent micro-grids, smart utility networks, and digitization.
Listing some of Haryana's achievements, Vij noted the establishment of a 10 MW solar plant at Panipat, more than 448 MW of ground-mounted solar projects, 13 sanctioned solar parks, and the declaration of Panchkula as a Model Solar City.
