Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has introduced BHIM VEGA, a UPI-based payment feature, within its Sarthi app in partnership with NPCI BHIM Services Limited. The update enables passengers to register UPI IDs, link bank accounts or RuPay cards, and complete secure payments directly inside the app. Along with this feature, the app also supports booking of the Jai Hind Sound and Light Show at Red Fort, ticketing with Noida Metro and DTC through ONDC, and digital recharge of RuPay NCMC cards. With nearly seven million journeys each day and most commuters already using digital ticketing, the new feature is expected to reduce queues and encourage wider adoption.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has added BHIM VEGA, a UPI-powered payment service, to its Sarthi app this past week. The feature has been developed with NPCI BHIM Services Limited (NBSL) and is designed to make ticket buying faster and easier for passengers. It allows users to register UPI IDs, connect their bank accounts or RuPay cards, and pay securely without leaving the app.
DMRC's Managing Director Vikas Kumar said that the metro network has been consistent in driving digital solutions, and this launch will simplify the daily ticketing process. He explained that one-click payments within the app will save time, streamline travel, and contribute to a unified digital mobility system. NBSL's Managing Director and CEO Lalitha Nataraj added that BHIM has always worked toward secure and inclusive payment options, and this collaboration aims to bring the ease of UPI directly into the routine of millions of metro users.
According to DMRC, BHIM VEGA provides faster checkouts, fewer failed transactions, and better safety features. Such benefits make it suitable not only for metro ticketing but also for other services where speed and security matter, including food delivery and online entertainment.
The Sarthi app has also received other updates. Passengers can now book tickets for the Jai Hind Sound and Light Show at Red Fort, which runs twice every day without an additional convenience fee. The app supports ticketing integration with Noida Metro Rail Corporation, allowing smoother travel planning between different metro services. In addition, Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus ticketing has been integrated via ONDC, so commuters can buy tickets for DTC, DMRC, NMRC, and NCRTC through a single platform. Airtel Payments Bank RuPay NCMC card users can also recharge their cards digitally within the app.
With nearly seven million passenger journeys handled daily, DMRC reports that more than 70 per cent of its commuters already use digital ticketing options. The introduction of BHIM VEGA is expected to reduce congestion at counters and encourage even greater adoption of digital modes among regular travellers.
