Synopsis

Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL) is set to restore 75 indoor and outdoor smart digital kiosks that have become non-functional due to insufficient maintenance. Installed across key locations, these kiosks provide services such as online tax payments, ticket booking, building approvals, and marriage certificate applications, along with internet browsing, charging facilities, and SOS services. Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra confirmed that repair work will begin soon to revive the kiosks and improve access to essential services for residents, addressing concerns over taxpayer money.

Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL) is preparing to restore 75 indoor and outdoor smart digital kiosks that have fallen into disuse in various parts of the city due to lack of maintenance. The kiosks were originally installed to provide residents with convenient access to services such as online payment of holding taxes, trade licence fees, building plan approvals, marriage certificates, and booking of cesspool vehicles or BMC Kalyan Mandaps.

Many of the kiosks, including those near Pathani Samanta Planetarium, Janpath, and Sachivalaya Marg, have remained non-functional for an extended period. BSCL had invested INR 8 crore in setting up these kiosks, and residents had previously raised concerns about the wasted public funds.

Minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra informed the state assembly that out of 75 kiosks, 50 indoor kiosks are installed in ward offices and 25 outdoor kiosks are located at strategic public locations such as hospitals and transport stations. Among the outdoor kiosks, 15 are currently non-functional. The minister confirmed that repair work for these units will begin shortly, with the aim of making all kiosks operational again.

The smart digital kiosks are a one-of-a-kind initiative under the Smart City Mission in Bhubaneswar. Besides service provision, they also offer internet access, charging points, and SOS facilities. Residents like Sritam Lenka from Patia have welcomed the decision, emphasizing that reviving the kiosks is essential for ensuring accessible public services and utilizing the city's resources efficiently.
