The Maharashtra Cabinet approved a major slum redevelopment initiative in Mumbai, aiming to transform slum clusters into integrated housing projects with improved living conditions while boosting private investment and construction activity. The move is expected to create employment in construction and allied sectors, supporting Mumbai's economic growth. Additionally, the state cleared a sewage treatment and reuse policy for 424 urban local bodies, allocated land for an e-bus depot in Amravati, extended career progression benefits for non-teaching staff in residential schools, and sanctioned a new senior civil court in Akole.
The Maharashtra Cabinet has approved a scheme to redevelop slums in Mumbai into integrated housing projects, providing better living conditions for residents and improving urban infrastructure. The initiative will be executed by the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), a state agency tasked with offering modern housing to families living in shanties.
The scheme aims to accelerate large-scale slum redevelopment while creating opportunities for private investment and construction activity. Officials noted that the project is expected to generate significant employment in construction and allied sectors, contributing to the economic growth of Mumbai.
In a related development, the Cabinet cleared a state-wide sewage treatment and reuse policy for 424 urban local bodies. The policy is designed to promote a circular economy by treating and reusing wastewater, supporting environmentally sustainable urban development. A circular economy, experts explain, focuses on reducing waste and pollution by keeping resources in continuous use.
The government also approved the allocation of 2.38 hectares of land at Mouza Badnera to the Amravati Municipal Corporation for 30 years. This land will be used to set up an e-bus depot and associated charging infrastructure under the Centre's PM-E Bus Scheme, boosting urban mobility and promoting green transportation.
The Cabinet extended the Modified Assured Career Progression (MACP) scheme to non-teaching staff at 980 aided residential ashram schools managed by voluntary organisations. These schools primarily serve students from OBC communities and children of sugarcane workers, ensuring improved welfare and career growth opportunities for staff.
Further, the government approved the establishment of a senior civil court in Akole, Ahilyanagar district, along with the creation of necessary posts for its smooth functioning.
In addition, the Cabinet amended the Maharashtra Prevention of Fragmentation and Consolidation of Holdings Act, 1947. The amendment removes a proviso under Section 8(b) and adds a new clause in Section 9 to prevent land fragmentation and strengthen consolidation measures across the state.
