The 2.79-kilometer twin-tube tunnel is part of the 464-kilometer Raipur-Visakhapatnam Economic Corridor (NH-130CD). Located along the hills bordering Kanker and Kondagaon districts near Odisha, the left tunnel is expected to open by March-April 2026, while the right tunnel will be ready by July-August 2026. The project is expected to enhance connectivity, reduce travel time, and support economic growth in the region.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has completed the construction of Chhattisgarh's first National Highway tunnel, marking a significant step in the state's road infrastructure. This twin-tube tunnel, spanning 2.79 kilometers, forms an integral part of the 464-kilometer Raipur-Visakhapatnam Economic Corridor (NH-130CD), which is being developed as a six-lane highway to improve connectivity between Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh.
The tunnel passes beneath the hilly terrain along the border of Kanker and Kondagaon districts, adjacent to Odisha. The left-hand tunnel is complete and is scheduled to open for traffic by March-April 2026. Excavation of the right-hand tunnel is underway and is expected to be finished by the end of this year, with operations planned for July-August 2026. Once both tunnels are operational, travel time along the corridor is expected to reduce considerably, facilitating smoother movement of goods and passengers and boosting regional trade and industry.
Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai described the completion as a historic step in strengthening Chhattisgarh's infrastructure. He noted that robust road networks are vital for economic development and will create opportunities in tourism, commerce, and social connectivity. He also thanked Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari and the NHAI team for their efforts. The project aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a developed India, enhancing long-term regional growth.
In addition to improving connectivity, the tunnel is expected to enhance safety and reliability for travelers along this route. Advanced engineering techniques have been employed in construction to ensure stability and durability under challenging hilly conditions. This project represents a combination of strategic planning and modern construction practices, positioning Chhattisgarh as a growing hub in India's national highway network.
