Trichy Corporation has updated water and UGD charges for residential properties, linking fees to built-up areas. Domestic water charges will rise between INR 180 and INR 360 per month, marking an 11% to 100% increase, while UGD fees have jumped over 60%, with a minimum of INR 100 and a maximum of INR 220 per month. The revision, part of funding agency requirements, follows five years without change. Apartment complexes are limited to one connection per four flats. Implementation is pending final approval, raising concerns among residents about potential rent impacts.
Trichy Corporation has revised its drinking water and underground drainage (UGD) charges, introducing a system where fees are based on the built-up area of residential properties. This change has resulted in a minimum increase of INR 20-40 per month per connection, with domestic water charges rising by 11% to 100% and UGD fees increasing over 60%. The revision comes after five years and is part of requirements set by funding agencies for loan approvals.
Under the previous system, households paid a flat rate of INR 180 per month for drinking water. The new structure sets charges between INR 180 and INR 360 per month for usage up to 16 kiloliters, depending on the property's floor area. Homes with a plinth area of 600 square feet or less will continue paying the old rate, while properties between 601 and 1,801 square feet will see monthly increases of INR 20-180. Non-domestic and industrial water charges have also been adjusted, with the byelaws mandating a 10% increase every five years for service connections and user fees.
For UGD, the minimum monthly fee has risen from INR 60 to INR 100, and the maximum is now INR 220 per connection. The byelaws also specify that apartment complexes are allowed one water and one UGD connection for every four flats. Drinking water supplied through lorries is now charged INR 2,000 per trip within 5 km and INR 3,000 beyond 5 km.
The square-foot-based fee approach has raised concerns among residents who suggested consumption-based charges could have been adopted instead. Officials explained that all other urban local bodies have already revised similar charges and that revenue from water and UGD user fees is considered by funding agencies when providing loans. Although the local body has passed the revised rates as a resolution, the implementation period has not been finalized.
