Delhi's Public Works Department (PWD) is preparing a INR 500 crore proposal for a double-decker flyover over the existing ISBT flyover. The elevated structure will connect Nigambodh Ghat near Margat Wale Baba to Majnu ka Tilla, creating a signal-free corridor from Rajghat to Majnu ka Tilla. The project, expected to take around two years to complete, aims to reduce traffic congestion, improve travel time, enhance safety, streamline bus operations, and reduce air pollution caused by vehicle idling in the area. DPR preparation is currently underway.
Delhi's Public Works Department (PWD) is developing a detailed plan for a double-decker flyover above the existing Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) flyover. The flyover will connect Nigambodh Ghat, near Margat Wale Baba, to Majnu ka Tilla, creating a signal-free corridor stretching from Rajghat to Majnu ka Tilla. Officials have said that once completed, the project will significantly reduce congestion and travel time for thousands of daily commuters and long-distance travelers.
The project represents the first instance of a 'flyover over a flyover' in Delhi. The elevated structure is designed to manage heavy traffic in this busy corridor and will bypass the Metcalfe Road intersection, relieving pressure on the existing infrastructure. Officials noted that the new flyover will provide smoother movement for vehicles, enhance safety, and streamline bus operations at ISBT.
Currently, traffic at ISBT is chaotic, with vehicles approaching from five different directions. This leads to persistent bottlenecks at the Metcalfe Road traffic signal and near the ISBT complex. The double-decker flyover will soar above the existing structure and descend near Majnu ka Tilla, bypassing these choke points. Authorities highlighted that this corridor will reduce travel time, improve reliability for interstate buses, and ease commuting stress for drivers.
The project is estimated to cost around INR 500 crore and could take nearly two years to complete once construction starts. While the plan is still in its early stages, with the detailed project report being prepared, the initiative offers hope for more efficient traffic management in one of Delhi's busiest zones.
