The Cabinet cleared the widening of the Kaliabor-Numaligarh section of NH-715 in Assam earlier this week, with the project set to be executed on the engineering, procurement and construction model. With an estimated cost of INR 6,957 crore, the 85.675 km stretch will incorporate wildlife-friendly features, particularly on the Kaziranga National Park segment, where heavy traffic and flooding during monsoons have endangered wildlife movement and safety.
The Cabinet recently gave approval for the widening of the Kaliabor-Numaligarh section of NH-715 in Assam, involving a capital expenditure of INR 6,957 crore. Officials explained that the project would be executed on the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) model, covering a total length of 85.675 km.
The development plan also includes wildlife-sensitive measures for the Kaziranga National Park stretch. Currently, the Kaliabor-Numaligarh section, part of the old NH-37, consists of a two-lane highway passing through the densely built towns of Jakhlabandha in Nagaon district and Bokakhat in Golaghat district.
A large part of the present alignment runs through or along the southern boundary of Kaziranga National Park, with restricted right of way of only 16-32 metres, further hampered by poor geometric conditions. During the monsoon, flooding in the park forces animals to migrate towards the elevated Karbi-Anglong hills, crossing the highway in the process. Officials noted that the constant flow of heavy traffic has caused frequent accidents and wildlife casualties.
The alignment has been designed to integrate with National Highways 127 and 129, as well as State Highway 35, thereby enhancing connectivity to critical social, economic, and logistics hubs across Assam.
The approval of the widening of the Kaliabor-Numaligarh highway section reflects a significant infrastructure investment aimed at improving regional connectivity while addressing wildlife protection concerns. By introducing measures to mitigate accidents and incorporating better road geometry, the project is expected to balance development with ecological sensitivity. Once completed, it will strengthen Assam's transport corridors and ease traffic movement through key urban and rural nodes.
