The six-laning of the 20-kilometre stretch of Mumbai-Agra highway between Gonde and Pimpri Sado is now scheduled for completion by December 2026, earlier than the original March 2027 deadline. NHAI has accelerated the work to handle the expected surge of pilgrims during the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, particularly in Nashik and Trimbakeshwar. The stretch connects to the Samruddhi Expressway, which will facilitate smoother travel. Post-Mela, the highway will be further expanded up to Vadpe, improving regional connectivity and supporting traffic management during major events.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has expedited the six-laning of the 20-km stretch between Gonde and Pimpri Sado on the Mumbai-Agra highway, with completion now expected by December next year. This revision brings the project well ahead of its original target of March 2027.
The acceleration comes in preparation for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, scheduled from October 2026 to July 2028, which is expected to draw large crowds, particularly during the Amrit Snan periods in August and September 2027. Pilgrims will gather for holy baths at Ramkund in Nashik and Trimbakeshwar, creating significant pressure on road traffic. District authorities are upgrading infrastructure to handle this surge effectively.
This stretch is strategically important because the Pimpri Sado end connects to the Samruddhi Expressway near Igatpuri. The connection is expected to serve as a main route for pilgrims traveling to Nashik and Trimbakeshwar. To manage the anticipated increase in vehicular movement, two additional lanes are being added along this section.
Following the Kumbh Mela, the NHAI plans to continue the six-laning extension up to Vadpe, enhancing connectivity further in the region. These upgrades are part of a broader strategy to improve road infrastructure in anticipation of major events and growing traffic demands, ensuring smoother and safer travel for commuters and visitors alike.
