Indian Railways is implementing extensive upgrades on the Kollam-Sengottai railway line to enhance passenger experience and operational efficiency. The initiatives include extending platform lengths, increasing train capacity, and replacing older Integral Coach Factory (ICF) coaches with modern Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches. Plans are also underway to consider adding Vistadome coaches for panoramic travel, once production meets demand. These steps aim to address previous concerns over underutilization, limited services, and speed restrictions along the scenic Kerala-Tamil Nadu route, making travel safer and more convenient.
Indian Railways is actively working on upgrading the Kollam-Sengottai railway line, a scenic route connecting Kerala and Tamil Nadu, to provide a more comfortable and efficient travel experience. The improvements include extending platform lengths and adding more train coaches to increase passenger capacity. These measures are designed to optimize train operations and reduce congestion during peak travel periods.
Earlier investments of nearly INR 420 crore were made for gauge conversion and electrification of the line. Despite these efforts, concerns had been raised about underutilization of services and the need for more convenient travel options.
The ongoing work to extend platform lengths is progressing, and once completed, additional train coaches will be introduced. Although trains currently face speed restrictions in forested areas, plans are being considered to safely increase train speeds on certain stretches. Older Integral Coach Factory (ICF) coaches will gradually be replaced by Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches, which offer better safety and comfort for passengers.
Railway officials are also exploring the addition of Vistadome coaches to provide panoramic views of the scenic route. Production delays and limited availability have so far prevented their inclusion, but they are expected to be considered once manufacturing meets demand. These enhancements are aimed at making the route more attractive for passengers while preserving its scenic value.
