Synopsis

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has called on top bureaucrats and state chief secretaries to take immediate action on stalled infrastructure projects rather than waiting for his intervention. During a Pragati meeting, he stressed that delays escalate costs and deprive citizens of essential services. Officials were encouraged to adopt state-level review mechanisms and ensure better coordination across agencies. Projects such as the 83-km Nangal Dam-Talwara-Mukerian railway line in Punjab and the North Koel Reservoir in Bihar and Jharkhand were discussed, highlighting decades-long delays. Modi emphasized result-oriented approaches to improve citizens' quality of life.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has instructed senior bureaucrats and state chief secretaries to proactively address delays in infrastructure projects without waiting for direct reviews. In the recent web-based Pragati meeting, he questioned whether disciplinary actions had been initiated against officials responsible for stalled projects and stressed that delays increase costs and deny citizens timely access to essential services.

The meeting reviewed long-pending projects, including the 83-km Nangal Dam-Talwara-Mukerian railway line in Punjab and the North Koel Reservoir project spanning Bihar and Jharkhand. These projects have experienced delays stretching back decades. Cabinet Secretary T V Somananthan presented progress reports on steps taken by both the Centre and states to expedite these initiatives. Modi urged officials to improve coordination and ensure faster project execution, emphasizing that approvals and clearances should be expedited as a routine process rather than waiting for Pragati meetings to prompt action.

The Prime Minister highlighted the "double cost" of project delays, which involves both rising expenditures and the public being deprived of infrastructure benefits. He recommended that states and Union Territories set up mechanisms for regular monitoring and review of flagship projects to overcome bottlenecks and complete projects on time. Modi emphasized that a result-oriented approach at both central and state levels could translate into better quality of life, ease of living for citizens, and smoother business operations.

By holding officials accountable and encouraging proactive planning, the government aims to ensure infrastructure projects are executed efficiently. The focus on monitoring and coordination is expected to prevent long-standing delays, optimize resources, and ensure citizens gain timely access to vital infrastructure services.
