A large-scale township project has been launched on Agra's outskirts, marking the city's most ambitious housing initiative in over three decades. Spread across 340 acres, the Atal Puram Township is expected to accommodate nearly 10,000 families. The plan includes residential, group housing and commercial plots, alongside world-class amenities like underground utilities, water treatment systems and public infrastructure. Executed with transparent land acquisition and phased development, the project is poised to redefine Agra's urban expansion with a modern, integrated approach.
Uttar Pradesh's Chief Minister inaugurated a major township project on the outskirts of Agra earlier this week, described as the Agra Development Authority's largest housing initiative in the past thirty-six years.
The township, strategically located at the intersection of the Inner Ring Road, Southern Bypass and Gwalior Road, covers an area of 340 acres and is projected to provide housing for approximately 10,000 families. Land for the project was directly acquired from farmers through mutual consent, reportedly at four times the circle rate. Around INR 800 crore has been allocated for land procurement, while a further INR 750 crore has been earmarked for infrastructure and development works.
Planned in three phases across eleven sectors, the township will comprise 1,430 residential plots, 18 group housing plots and 96 commercial plots. Infrastructure development includes underground ducts for utilities, sewage systems, a water treatment plant and public facilities such as a police post, fire station and a multipurpose convention centre.
During the visit, the Chief Minister also held a review meeting with local officials and elected representatives. He is understood to have instructed teams to inspect and repair roads as part of a city-wide pothole removal campaign. He also requested a comprehensive drainage action plan and urged departments such as urban development, tourism and public works to offer input to enhance the plan's implementation. A state minister noted that development work was progressing with greater efficiency and transparency under the current administration.
With substantial investment in both land and infrastructure, the initiative not only addresses the city's housing demands but also raises the bar for modern civic amenities. By facilitating organised growth on the city's periphery, the township stands to improve quality of life and catalyse further development, reflecting the state government's commitment to forward-looking urban expansion.
