Synopsis

The Delhi Development Authority has initiated rent disbursals to residents evacuated from Signature View Apartments, with payments structured according to flat category. Delays in past disbursements had fostered mistrust among residents, leading to reluctance in vacating. However, rent is now being released flat-wise upon confirmation of vacancy. The move aligns with court directions aimed at expediting evacuation, demolition, and eventual redevelopment of the deteriorating housing complex.

The Delhi Development Authority has commenced payment of rent compensation to residents who have vacated flats at Signature View Apartments. These payments are being made individually, based on the type of flat and following verification of vacancy. High-income group flats are eligible for INR 50,000 per month, while middle-income group units are being compensated at INR 38,000 monthly.

Earlier delays in releasing the promised rent had created a trust deficit between residents and the authority. The Resident Welfare Association indicated that only residents who had submitted the necessary documentation had received rent, resulting in hesitation among the rest to vacate their premises. This lag affected the overall pace of evacuation from the structurally unsafe building.

In response, the High Court had directed the DDA to ensure transparency and timely disbursement of rent as part of efforts to restore confidence among the residents. The court had also insisted that evacuation must proceed simultaneously with rent release in order to avoid further delays in demolition and redevelopment.

Residents had previously been given a deadline towards the end of July to vacate their flats. To enforce this deadline, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi had been authorised to take necessary action, including disconnection of utilities, against those who failed to comply.

To further streamline the process, revised standard operating procedures had been introduced. These included assigning site engineers to assist with handovers and act as on-ground liaisons. However, uncertainty regarding the commencement of rent payouts had persisted until the recent initiation of flat-wise disbursals.

With trust beginning to be re-established, more residents may now feel confident in vacating their units. As the DDA continues to execute court-backed directives and enforce the vacate order, this development marks a crucial step towards the safe demolition and reconstruction of the ageing housing complex.
