The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has approved a significant 50% waiver on the general tax component of property tax bills for residents and industrial units located in designated 'red zones.' This decision, set to take effect from the financial year 2026-2027, is a compensatory measure for the civic body's inability to provide adequate facilities and services to these areas. The waiver applies to over 43,000 properties but has faced criticism from housing societies who argue it may encourage unauthorized construction.
In a move aimed at addressing civic service disparities, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has announced a 50% property tax waiver for residents and property owners in the city's designated 'red zones.' The waiver, which will be applied to the general tax component of the property tax bill, is set to begin from the financial year 2026-2027, starting on April 1, 2026.
According to officials, the decision was a result of PCMC being unable to provide full civic amenities, such as schools and sports facilities, to these areas. The waiver is intended to compensate residents for this lack of services. However, to be eligible for the discount, property owners must first clear all of their outstanding tax dues.
The initiative, however, has drawn criticism from local housing societies and regular taxpayers. They argue that the decision is unfair to those who pay their taxes in full and that it might inadvertently encourage illegal construction, as many of the properties in the red zone are considered unauthorized.
The waiver will impact a large number of properties, including more than 3,000 industrial units, and over 43,000 properties in total, located primarily near the Dehu Road Ordnance Depot and Dighi Magazine depot.
