Haryana's Animal Husbandry Minister, Shyam Singh Rana, has directed that all cow shelters (gaushalas) in the state set up biogas plants to enhance self-sufficiency and financial viability. He also encouraged producing value-added dairy products within shelters and called for collaboration with Karnal's NDRI to improve livestock quality and milk yields. Budget-linked projects under review include interest-free loans for women-led dairy units, a semen sorting lab, and new gaushala sheds. Rana also called for establishing a cow sanctuary and modernising veterinary diagnostics. Separately, he urged the State Warehousing Corporation to fast-track 3 lakh MT of new warehouse capacity and set up nearby crop procurement centres.
Haryana's Animal Husbandry and Dairying Minister, Shyam Singh Rana, issued a key directive to officials on Tuesday, mandating the establishment of biogas plants in all 'gaushalas,' or cow shelters, throughout the state. This initiative is aimed at making these shelters self-sustaining and improving their financial viability. In the same meeting, the minister also instructed officials to explore the potential for producing value-added dairy products within these gaushalas, which would help reduce their operational costs while providing the public with high-quality dairy items.
To further improve the state's livestock sector, Rana emphasized the need for collaboration with experts from the National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) in Karnal. This partnership is intended to adopt modern technologies for enhancing both the quality of livestock breeds and overall milk production. The minister urged officials to make greater use of NDRI's expertise to benefit farmers and the broader dairy industry in Haryana.
Rana also reviewed the status of several departmental initiatives that were announced in the March 2025 state budget. He directed that all of these projects be completed within their scheduled timelines. These include providing interest-free loans of up to INR 1 lakh to women to help them set up their own dairy units, establishing a semen sorting lab for indigenous bull breeds, and constructing new sheds in registered gaushalas under the Gau Sewa Aayog. The minister also pushed for the creation of a Gau Abhyaranya (cow sanctuary) and the installation of modern diagnostic equipment in veterinary institutions.
In a separate review meeting, Minister of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, Rana gave new directions to the Haryana State Warehousing Corporation. He instructed the corporation to speed up the construction of new warehouses that have a combined capacity of three lakh metric tonnes. He also stressed the importance of acquiring land adjacent to these warehouses to set up crop procurement centers. These measures are designed to help reduce transportation costs for farmers and ease congestion in the state's 'mandis,' or grain markets.
