Synopsis

Indian Railways is working on a plan to integrate its suburban railway network with Mumbai's rapidly growing metro system to ensure a smooth travel experience for commuters. The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) is coordinating with metro authorities to align infrastructure at key interchange stations. This initiative, which includes proposed skywalks and common concourses at major hubs like Dadar, Kurla, and Andheri, aims to allow passengers to switch between the two networks without having to exit station premises. This move is part of a wider effort to make multi-modal transit more attractive for daily users and to reduce travel time across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

As the metro network in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) expands quickly, Indian Railways is now working on plans to integrate suburban railway and metro stations. This effort aims to create seamless transfers for passengers and provide better last-mile connectivity.

A senior railway official stated that the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC), which handles suburban rail projects in the area, is coordinating with the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to align infrastructure at interchange stations.

The official also noted that they are identifying key locations where metro lines cross suburban lines. This will allow passengers to switch from one mode of transport to another without leaving the station. Proposed upgrades include building skywalks, common concourses, and travelators to connect platforms. This plan is being developed at major hubs such as Dadar, Kurla, Andheri, Bandra, and Ghatkopar, among others.

This initiative comes amid complaints from commuters about the difficulty of transferring between the suburban and metro networks, especially where stations are not well integrated. Officials added that joint surveys and feasibility studies are underway. The goal is to reduce travel time and make using both suburban trains and the metro easier and more appealing for daily commuters.

The MRVC is also looking at similar integration models from other Indian cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, and Chennai to learn from their successes. This effort is part of a larger push to improve Mumbai's public transport. For context, the entire 33.5 km corridor of Metro Line 3 is expected to be fully operational soon, and the government is planning a unified 'Mumbai One' app for seamless ticketing across all metro lines.

This integration of the city's metro and railway networks, which serve millions of commuters daily, is key to building a more connected and efficient urban transport system.
