Odisha Chief Minister Shri Mohan Charan Majhi has announced that land acquisition for a mega steel plant in Keonjhar district will begin soon, as the company has already deposited the required funds. A joint venture between JSW Group and South Korean steel giant POSCO, is set for an initial investment of over INR 40,000 crore and a production capacity of 5 million tonnes per year. This development is seen as a key step in boosting the mineral-rich district's economy and creating new employment opportunities for local youth, with the Chief Minister taking it as a challenge to bring large-scale industry to the area.
Odisha Chief Minister Shri Mohan Charan Majhi recently announced that land acquisition for a proposed mega steel plant in Keonjhar district will begin soon. The Chief Minister made the statement after a review of several development projects in the district, noting that the company involved has already deposited the necessary funds for the purpose.
According to official sources, the mega steel project will be a joint venture between the JSW Group and the South Korean steel giant, POSCO. The plant is planned to have an initial production capacity of 5 million tonnes per year and is expected to involve an investment of over INR 40,000 crore. The government has identified two land patches for the project, one near Taramakant and another at Patna.
Majhi stated that Keonjhar will get a mega steel plant and that preparations for this have already started, with the process having moved two steps forward. The Chief Minister also mentioned that he has taken it as a challenge to set up a mega steel mill in Keonjhar, as the district currently lacks large-scale industries. The establishment of the plant is expected to boost the mineral-rich district's economy and provide new jobs for local youths.
The government has also been undertaking several other development projects in the district, such as national highway expansion, and stated there is no shortage of funds for Keonjhar's development. Following his arrival in the district, Majhi chaired a review meeting, met with local MLAs, and asked for their cooperation. He also flagged off three new ambulances and a unique 'Maa Tarini's coconut collection vehicle,' an initiative likely tied to the renowned Maa Tarini Temple in Ghatagaon, where coconuts are a popular offering.
