Work under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) in Mysuru and Chamarajanagar has slowed due to a sharp increase in construction material and labour costs. In Mysuru, of the 20,908 sanctioned houses, work has begun on around 13,442, while in Chamarajanagar, approvals have been issued for just 10,712 of the 39,317 houses. The government grant of INR 1.2 lakh for general category and INR 1.8 lakh for SC/ST beneficiaries is no longer enough to cover construction expenses. Many beneficiaries have not yet received allotment letters, delaying the start of construction.
The implementation of PMAY-G in Mysuru and Chamarajanagar districts has been affected by rising costs of materials and labour, making it harder for beneficiaries to start construction. In Mysuru, out of 20,908 sanctioned houses, work is in progress on 13,442 homes. However, 7,466 beneficiaries are still waiting to receive their sanction letters.
In Chamarajanagar, the situation is more severe. Of the 39,317 houses approved under the scheme, only 10,712 have been sanctioned so far. Local officials said that the sharp rise in the cost of cement, steel, and labour has made it difficult for many beneficiaries to begin construction, even after receiving approvals.
Under the scheme, the central government provides INR 1.2 lakh for general category and INR 1.8 lakh for SC/ST beneficiaries. In addition, INR 31,410 can be claimed through the MGNREGA scheme for 90 days of labour work, and INR 20,000 is provided for toilet construction under the Swachh Bharat Mission for SC/ST beneficiaries. Despite this, former gram panchayat president HM Sambram said the financial assistance does not match current construction costs.
Officials in Mysuru mentioned that the district is ahead of others in implementing the scheme, with several districts showing progress in only single digits. Authorities said that panchayat development officers will be instructed to speed up work and clear pending files so that the remaining beneficiaries can receive their sanction letters soon.
