Five bridges and two culverts across key routes in Raigad district have been closed to heavy vehicles following a structural audit revealing dangerously low load-bearing capacities, ranging from 5 to 16 tonnes. District collector Kishan Jawale issued the order, as the ongoing monsoon has worsened these structures. The ban affects routes including Alibag-Roha and Poynad-Usar-Bhandardara. Authorities urge strict compliance to prevent accidents, highlighting the need for vigilance over aging infrastructure in the district.
Movement of heavy vehicles has been banned over five bridges and two culverts across key routes in Raigad district. This action follows a structural audit that revealed these bridges have dangerously low load-bearing capacities, ranging from just 5 to 16 tonnes.
District collector Kishan Jawale issued the order last week, putting a safety code into effect. The ongoing monsoon season has reportedly worsened the condition of these structures, leading to the immediate ban.
The affected bridges include the Poynad-Usar and Dehen Bridge, both located on the Roha road (State Highway 91). Additionally, two culverts along the road to Poynad and Dehen are also impacted. The load-bearing capacity of these bridges and culverts was found to be below standard, and authorities have urged strict compliance with the ban to prevent any future accidents. The district collector warned that any violation could lead to strict action.
To help drivers navigate the affected areas, alternative routes have been suggested. For bridges on the Alibag-Roha Road, drivers can use the Alibag-Ambegaon-Bhise Khind route to reach Roha. For bridges on the Alibag-Revadanda and Poynad-Usar-Bhandardara routes, drivers should go via Alibag-Usar. For the Dehen Bridge, vehicles are directed to take the Panchav Devi-Poynad-Shirgaon route to Dehen. These measures aim to ensure public safety while critical infrastructure is addressed.
