Synopsis

Mizoram is set to be fully connected to India's railway network with the 51.38-km Bairabi-Sairang broad-gauge line, to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September 2025. Built at a cost of INR 5,021 crore, the line will link Sairang, 20 km from Aizawl, with Silchar in Assam, integrating Mizoram with Assam, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh. The project includes 48 tunnels, 55 major bridges, and the 114-metre-high Krung Bridge, showcasing complex engineering in tough terrain. The new route will cut travel time for essential goods from 10 hours by road to about three hours, easing costs and improving connectivity for the state.

Mizoram is on the verge of being fully connected to India's national railway network with the upcoming 51.38-km Bairabi-Sairang broad-gauge line, constructed at an estimated cost of INR 5,021 crore, which Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate in the second week of September 2025.

The line will terminate at Sairang, linking the state capital Aizawl, about 20 km away, with Silchar in Assam via Bhodahpur Junction. This connection integrates Mizoram with Assam, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh. Northeast Frontier Railway officials said that they plan to connect other northeastern states, including Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Sikkim, with the national network by 2030.

The project includes 48 tunnels totaling 12.85 km, with the longest at 1.37 km, 55 major bridges, the longest spanning 1.3 km and the tallest Krung Bridge in Sairang, standing 114 m high, 87 minor bridges, five road overbridges, and six road underbridges, reflecting significant engineering effort in challenging terrain.

Prime Minister Modi had virtually laid the foundation stone on 29th November, 2014, and virtually flagged off the first passenger train between Bairabi and Silchar on 27th May, 2016.

Before the railway line, essential goods for Mizoram were transported from Silchar, a journey taking about 10 hours by road. With the new line, travel time will be reduced to around three hours, facilitating faster and more cost-effective movement of goods, which is expected to lower prices for daily necessities.
