On Gadchiroli's 43rd foundation day, Maharashtra Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis pledged to transform the district into a development hub, highlighting progress in reducing Maoist influence and boosting infrastructure, education, and employment. He noted that nearly half the district is now Maoism-free, with initiatives like Police Dadalora Khidki helping tribal communities access government schemes. Plans include turning Gadchiroli into India's "steel city" with INR 1 lakh crore investments from companies like Lloyds Metals and JSW in Surjagarh's iron ore reserves. Education reforms include affiliating colleges with Gondwana University and launching the Ek Gaon, Ek Granthalaya scheme, establishing 71 libraries for 8,000 students.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis on August 25, 2025, vowed to transform Gadchiroli into a leading district in terms of development. The Chief Minister, who is also the guardian minister of Gadchiroli, made the comments on the occasion of the district's 43rd foundation day. Gadchiroli, which was carved out of the former Chandrapur district in 1982, has a history of being deprived of development and a hotbed for Maoist activity.
Fadnavis stated that since 2014, the district has been brought into the mainstream. He added that the government's top priority has been to free Gadchiroli from Maoism, set up industries, provide education and employment, and improve its infrastructure. He also mentioned that nearly half of the district has become Maoism-free and that the government is working to achieve Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah's target of making the entire country free of Maoism by March 2026.
To fight against Naxals, the government has praised the role of police and C-60 commandos. Initiatives like the 'Police Dadalora Khidki' (Police Brother's Window) have also helped local tribal communities access government schemes. The initiative, which was started in 2021 by IPS officer Ankit Goyal, provides a unified window system for all public services and has been praised as a "game-changer" in the fight against Maoism.
Fadnavis also announced plans to transform Gadchiroli into the country's "steel city," with investments of around INR 1 lakh crore flowing into the district. Companies like Lloyds Metals and Steel and JSW Group are investing in the Surjagarh area, which is known for its iron ore reserves. The mining activities, which were stalled for years due to Maoist resistance, have now resumed and have created jobs in the region. The government is also laying equal emphasis on protecting its water, land, forests, and environment.
The government is also focusing on education, with all degree colleges in Gadchiroli now affiliated with the recently established Gondwana University. A new initiative, 'Ek Gaon, Ek Granthalaya' ("One Village, One Library"), has also been launched, with 71 libraries set up in the past two years, enrolling over 8,000 students. Fadnavis also praised the active cooperation of the district's people in the development process.
