The Trichy Corporation has launched a INR 2 crore project to upgrade 3,250 streetlights from 20-watt to 40-watt LEDs across residential areas, following complaints about poor visibility and safety concerns. Around 650 lights will be replaced in each of the city's five zones, with work to be completed in phases over the coming months. The 20-watt LEDs, installed in 2018 during the city's shift from sodium and fluorescent lamps, are now inadequate due to urban growth and rising traffic. Each ward will get 50 brighter lights, prioritizing junctions and busy streets, while 20-watt LEDs will remain on narrower roads to balance costs.
The Trichy Corporation has initiated a project with a budget of INR 2 crore to upgrade 3,250 existing 20-watt LED streetlights to 40-watt LEDs in various residential sectors. This move comes after residents reported dim streetlights, particularly in densely populated areas and major junctions, affecting visibility and safety.
The upgrade will be implemented in phases, with approximately 650 streetlights being replaced in each of the city's five zones. The work is expected to be completed over the next few months, ensuring systematic and organized improvements.
These 20-watt LEDs were installed in 2018 when the city transitioned from older fluorescent and sodium lamps to energy-efficient LEDs. At the time, they were considered sufficient for developing residential areas. However, with the city's expansion and increasing traffic, these lights have become inadequate. Currently, around 25,000 such low-capacity streetlights are still in use, making them some of the least powerful in Trichy's infrastructure.
The corporation plans to prioritize upgrades in areas such as junctions, wider streets, and densely populated neighborhoods. Each of the city's 65 wards will receive 50 upgraded streetlights, with local councillors responsible for identifying priority locations.
To manage electricity costs, the corporation will retain the 20-watt LEDs on narrower carriageways while replacing lights in areas where increased brightness is necessary. This approach aims to improve lighting while keeping budgetary concerns in check.
