Synopsis

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and Maha Mumbai Metro (MMMOCL) have announced a series of measures following a recent monorail incident to strengthen passenger safety. Short-term steps focus on regulating passenger load, adding security staff and technicians onboard, marking emergency windows, improving safety signage, and conducting full inspections across the fleet. For the long term, MMRDA has already procured ten new monorail rakes, with seven under trial and certification before joining regular service. No passenger injuries were reported in the incident, and evacuation was carried out smoothly with help from emergency services.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has outlined both immediate and long-term measures to reinforce safety on the city's monorail system after a recent operational incident. The authority has directed Maha Mumbai Metro (MMMOCL) to put stricter checks in place while new rakes are being prepared for induction.

As part of short-term action, station staff have been asked to closely regulate passenger entry to prevent overcrowding. Each monorail coach has a maximum load capacity of 104 tonnes, and if this is exceeded, trains will be stopped and passengers safely deboarded before continuing the journey. To further ensure safety, every train will now have security personnel on board, and a trained technician will travel along with the pilot to attend to technical issues immediately.

Emergency readiness has also been tightened. Each train has eight ventilation windows, two in every coach which are now being inspected and clearly labeled for easy identification during emergencies. More visible safety signage is being added inside trains to guide passengers on emergency protocols and exit routes. The Director of Maintenance has also been tasked with conducting complete inspections of all operating trains to confirm that these safety measures are fully in place.

On the long-term side, MMRDA has procured ten new monorail rakes. Seven of them have already arrived at the depot and are undergoing detailed trials and certification. Once cleared, they will be added to passenger service, which will increase capacity and reduce operational pressure on the existing fleet.

The recent incident did not result in any injuries. All passengers were safely evacuated in time, with assistance from the Municipal Corporation and the Fire Brigade, whose prompt response was acknowledged by MMRDA. Officials stressed that the authority's commitment remains focused on ensuring a safe, reliable, and comfortable travel experience for all monorail users.
