The Maharashtra cabinet has approved INR 20,000 crore to resume land acquisition for the 800-km Shaktipeeth Expressway, which will link Pavnar in Wardha to Patradevi at the Goa border. Funded through a HUDCO-backed loan, the project aims to cut Nagpur-Goa travel time from 20 to 8-10 hours and will connect 18 pilgrimage and heritage sites. Estimated to cost INR 84,000-86,000 crore, the project faces renewed farmer protests over compensation and displacement. Land measurement is to conclude by August, with acquisition targeted for December. Modeled on the Samruddhi Mahamarg, it's part of MSRDC's larger push to fast-track key infrastructure corridors statewide.
The Maharashtra cabinet approved an allocation of INR 20,000 crore to restart land acquisition for the long-awaited Shaktipeeth Expressway an 800-km access-controlled corridor designed to connect Pavnar in Wardha to Patradevi at the Goa border. Of the total, INR 12,000 crore is expected to be raised through a HUDCO-backed loan with a 15-year repayment plan, while INR 8,000 crore is designated for interest obligations.
The corridor is strategically planned to reduce Nagpur-Goa travel time from nearly 20 hours to 8-10 hours and is modelled on the Samruddhi Mahamarg. This expressway will connect 18 significant pilgrimage and heritage sites, including three Shaktipeeths and two Jyotirlingas, along with Pandharpur, Kolhapur, and Ambajogai. The entire project is estimated to cost around INR 84,000-86,000 crore.
Land measurement is expected to conclude by August, with acquisition scheduled for completion by December, according to the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). This project was temporarily halted following strong resistance from farmers and local groups in Kolhapur and Sangli last year, largely due to concerns over displacement, inadequate compensation, and environmental clearances.
The state government had earlier withdrawn its clearance request, resuming work only on areas without opposition. However, fresh protests are expected this week as farmers raise alarms over acquisition notices reportedly being served without hearings. A statewide rasta roko (road blockade) protest is being planned.
This expressway is part of a broader infrastructure thrust by the MSRDC, which is simultaneously pursuing projects like the Pune ring road, Jalna-Nanded Expressway, and Virar-Alibaug corridor. The state is under pressure to complete land acquisition for all major corridors by the end of next year.
