Just weeks after opening, the 76-km Igatpuri-Amane stretch of the Samruddhi Expressway has developed large potholes on its asphalt bridge surfaces, raising concerns over construction quality. Built at a cost of INR 1,182 crore, this section adds to a series of issues along the 701-km Nagpur-Mumbai corridor, including earlier cracks near Shahapur, Nagpur, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. While the expressway boasts features like Maharashtra's widest tunnels, wildlife crossings, and smart tolling, recurring surface failures may undermine its goal of halving travel time. Constructed under MSRDC, the six-lane expressway was launched in phases from 2022, but quality control remains a growing public concern.
The newly launched 76-kilometre stretch of the Samruddhi Expressway, linking Igatpuri to Amane, has developed several sizable potholes on its asphalt bridge surface just weeks after becoming operational. This stretch, developed at an estimated cost of INR 1,182-crore was inaugurated this week.
While the expressway was conceived as a state of the art route with concrete carriageways for most sections and asphalt on bridges it appears the latter surfaces are deteriorating rapidly. Earlier this year, cracks were noted on the concrete section between Amane and Shahapur. Similar distress was reported near Nagpur and Amravati in past months, including a 50-foot crack near Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in mid-last year and a crater this year.
Despite these defects, initial phases of the Samruddhi Expressway have included impressive features such as Maharashtra's widest tunnels (7.78-km long, 17.6-m wide), multiple viaducts, wildlife crossings, water-recharge pits every 500-m, solar power integration, fire-resistant linings, and smart toll systems.
The Samruddhi corridor stretching 701-km from Nagpur to Mumbai is being constructed in phases. The expressway was first launched in late 2022, with subsequent phases opening in mid 2023 and early 2024. Built under the stewardship of MSRDC and designed as a six-lane, access-controlled route, the expressway includes cutting-edge fire safety in tunnels and smart monitoring systems. Despite its design aiming to halve travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur, recurring maintenance concerns may diminish some of its intended impact.
