West Bengal has launched an ambitious expansion of its IT infrastructure with four new parks three in North Bengal and one in Chinsurah, Hooghly. Construction is already underway at Kurseong under the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration, while Kalimpong and Jalpaiguri parks are next in line. These developments follow the high occupancy of 22 existing state-run IT parks operated by WBEIDC. The initiative complements earlier government-backed tech expansions in New Town, Salt Lake, and Siliguri, including a 25-acre PPP tech-cultural hub and an AI-focused IT park.
West Bengal has introduced four new IT parks aimed at enhancing connectivity, employment, and economic activity outside traditional metros. The state's IT & Electronics Minister revealed that three of the upcoming facilities will be set up in North Bengal in Kurseong, Kalimpong, and Jalpaiguri while the fourth is planned for Chinsurah in the Hooghly district.
Construction work in Kurseong, facilitated by the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration, is already in progress. A site near Delo has been earmarked for the Kalimpong IT park, which is expected to break ground soon. The third North Bengal location Jalpaiguri is also under consideration for immediate commencement. Meanwhile, the Chinsurah project will expand the state's digital footprint into South Bengal's semi-urban zones.
These additions come at a time when the state's 22 operational IT parks, managed by the West Bengal Electronics Industry Development Corporation (WBEIDC), are already functioning at 80?% to full occupancy. State officials recently showcased these developments during an interactive session hosted by the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry. They also mentioned that a hardware park in Sonarpur is currently open for allocations at highly competitive rates to attract hardware and manufacturing firms.
The initiative is consistent with West Bengal's broader strategy to establish itself as an IT powerhouse in Eastern India. Legacy infrastructure like the Salt Lake Electronics Complex, developed in the late 1980s, remains a key pillar of Kolkata's IT presence. Simultaneously, the Bengal Silicon Valley Tech Hub in New Town is being actively scaled up to accommodate over 100,000 direct jobs, with expansion works progressing steadily.
Recent government approvals have further reinforced this momentum. Just a few weeks ago, the state cabinet cleared a 25-acre IT, entertainment, and cultural park in New Town, designed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Additionally, an AI-dedicated IT park and four industrial estates were sanctioned for Siliguri, with the potential to create over 5,000 new jobs across various tech-driven sectors.
Together, these measures underscore West Bengal's intention to build a decentralised, inclusive tech ecosystem that reaches deep into underserved regions, balancing job creation with long-term digital infrastructure.
