The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated a 15-day intensive drive to combat monsoon-related challenges, particularly flooding and waterlogging, on national highways. As part of this effort, NHAI teams, including contractors and consultants, are inspecting vulnerable stretches across the country. Measures such as drain cleaning, pothole repair, desilting of culverts and rainwater harvesting systems, and placement of emergency equipment are being implemented to ensure safe and smooth traffic flow during the rainy season.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) recently launched a proactive initiative aimed at mitigating issues of flooding and waterlogging on National Highways across the country. The move is part of a strategic monsoon management plan, especially designed to address seasonal disruptions that typically impact road infrastructure and traffic safety.
Adopting a multi-pronged approach, NHAI has begun a 15-day inspection and preparedness drive. Under this programme, teams comprising NHAI officials, contractors, and consultants are conducting thorough inspections of various stretches of the national highway network. The primary goal is to identify critical spots that are either historically prone to damage or susceptible to severe waterlogging during heavy rains.
In addition to identifying vulnerable locations, NHAI has started cleaning and desilting existing rainwater harvesting structures. The authority also confirmed that it is fixing drains and outlets to ensure uninterrupted water flow. These efforts are intended to prevent any obstruction in drainage systems that could contribute to water accumulation on road surfaces.
Furthermore, potholes on diversions, slip roads, and main carriageways are being actively repaired. NHAI is also carrying out desilting of culverts, cross drains, and the cleaning of weep holes-particularly in regions known for recurring monsoon-related waterlogging.
To enhance emergency responsiveness, the agency is mobilising essential equipment and materials-including excavators, sandbags, and cautionary signage-at identified waterlogging-prone sites. These provisions are aimed at maintaining road connectivity and ensuring the smooth and safe movement of traffic during monsoon showers.
