Synopsis

The Kerala government has approved a negotiated land purchase approach to acquire 358 acres in Ayyampuzha for the much-delayed Global City project, part of the Kochi-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (KBIC). Implemented by state agency Kinfra, this move aims to bypass delays tied to traditional acquisition methods. Of the total land, 215 acres will be dedicated to industrial use. The project, crucial for regional economic integration, had earlier faced setbacks due to Union government concerns over non-industrial components. In contrast, KBIC's Palakkad-based Industrial Manufacturing Cluster has already secured approvals. The new approach may also ensure faster delivery and better compensation for landowners.

The Kerala government has recently decided to proceed with the negotiated purchase of land for a major urban development project in Ayyampuzha. This crucial step, following a multi-year delay, aims to accelerate the establishment of the Global City, a key component of the ambitious Kochi-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (KBIC).

Land procurement for the project will span a total of 358 acres. Authorities are opting for direct negotiation with landowners, a method intended to bypass the often-lengthy delays associated with conventional land acquisition processes. Kinfra, a state-level agency, has been designated as the implementing body overseeing this process.

The Global City project holds significant strategic importance as a crucial element of the expansive KBIC, an initiative designed to foster industrial growth and economic integration between Kerala and Karnataka. The project had previously encountered delays when the Union government reportedly expressed reservations, perceiving some of its residential and real estate elements as not strictly industrial in nature.

An earlier proposal had earmarked INR 500 crore for the acquisition of 500 acres; however, the current plan focuses on securing 358 acres, with 215 acres specifically allocated for industrial development.

In contrast, the Industrial Manufacturing Cluster (IMC) in Palakkad, another vital component of KBIC, has already received approvals and been allocated 325.26 acres. This shift to a negotiated purchase is anticipated to expedite development, potentially allowing landowners to receive enhanced compensation.
