Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has acquired land in Kandla, Gujarat, to develop green hydrogen and ammonia facilities-advancing its clean energy ambitions in sync with India's National Green Hydrogen Mission. Chairman S N Subrahmanyan confirmed electrolyser manufacturing is already underway, giving L&T a first-mover edge. The company also received U.S. Department of Energy approval to transfer Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology to India, becoming one of only three Indian firms eligible. L&T plans to localise manufacturing and build proprietary tech for developing markets. Through its new subsidiary, L&T Green Energy Kandla Pvt Ltd, the company is gearing up to deliver global-scale EPC solutions in green fuels.
Larsen & Toubro (L&T) recently announced that it had secured land in Kandla, Gujarat, for the development of green hydrogen and green ammonia projects. This marks a significant step in the company's clean energy initiatives, aligning with the Indian government's push to promote green hydrogen through efforts like the National Green Hydrogen Mission and transportation-focused pilot schemes.
While addressing shareholders during a recent interaction, the company's Chairman and Managing Director, S N Subrahmanyan, remarked that L&T had made substantial headway in emerging clean energy technologies-particularly green hydrogen and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). He mentioned that the company had already initiated electrolyser manufacturing, which granted L&T a first-mover advantage in the green hydrogen space.
Subrahmanyan further revealed that a pivotal milestone had been reached with the United States Department of Energy granting regulatory approval for the transfer of SMR technology to India. He added that L&T was one of only three Indian companies eligible for the technology transfer, highlighting that this marked the official beginning of the company's SMR journey and positioned it to lead the commercialisation of nuclear energy within India.
He explained that although the company had initially collaborated with global partners for both green hydrogen and SMR ventures, its long-term ambition was to build proprietary technology, manufacture essential equipment in-house, and deliver innovative, cost-effective solutions specifically designed for developing markets.
Reinforcing its commitment, L&T confirmed that it had secured the land parcel in Kandla to establish manufacturing units for green hydrogen and green ammonia. Subrahmanyan noted that L&T also possessed the expertise to deliver EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) projects for green hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol at a global scale.
Previously, the company had announced the incorporation of L&T Green Energy Kandla Pvt Ltd, formed to spearhead its green hydrogen project developments. Green hydrogen refers to hydrogen generated via the electrolysis of water powered by renewable energy sources, making it a clean and sustainable alternative to conventional fuels.
With electrolyser production underway and global regulatory greenlights in place, the conglomerate is positioning itself as a key player in clean energy infrastructure. The intent to develop proprietary technologies underscores its ambition not just to participate but to lead in India?s energy transition.
