State-owned Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has announced its significant contribution of over 31,000 tonnes of steel to the under-construction Zojila Tunnel, a vital infrastructure project on the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh National Highway. This ambitious tunnel, considered India's longest road tunnel and Asia's longest bi-directional tunnel, is pivotal for ensuring all-weather connectivity and enhancing both civilian and military mobility in the strategically crucial Himalayan region. SAIL's continuous supply, including TMT Re-bars, structurals, and plates, underscores its unwavering commitment to national development projects as the tunnel progresses towards its expected completion by 2027.
State-owned Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) announced on Monday, July 21, 2025, that it has supplied over 31,000 tonnes of various steel products for the under-construction Zojila Tunnel project. This critical infrastructure initiative, situated on the challenging Srinagar-Kargil-Leh National Highway, is poised to significantly enhance both civilian and military mobility across the region once completed. SAIL's contribution, which includes essential materials like TMT Re-bars, structurals, and plates, underscores its pivotal role in India's strategic development.
The Zojila Tunnel holds immense strategic importance, as it will provide all-weather connectivity between Srinagar, Dras, Kargil, and Leh, an area that historically remains cut off for six to seven months during winter due to heavy snowfall over the Zojila Pass. Situated at an altitude of approximately 3,500 meters (11,578 feet), the main tunnel is envisioned to be around 14.15 kilometers long, with associated approach roads extending the total length of the project to over 30 kilometers.
This ambitious undertaking, which saw its foundation stone laid by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in May 2018, is designed to reduce the challenging travel time across the pass from several hours to just about 15 minutes. It is expected to become India's longest road tunnel and Asia's longest bi-directional tunnel upon its operationalization.
SAIL, recognized as India's largest public sector steel producer with an annual capacity exceeding 20 million tonnes, has maintained a consistent supply chain for the Zojila Tunnel project. As of early 2025, approximately 70% of the work on the Zojila Tunnel had been completed, despite the extreme weather conditions and complex terrain of the Himalayas.
The company's steel has been a trusted component in numerous other iconic developments, including the Chenab Railway Bridge, the Atal Tunnel, the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, and the Dhola Sadiya and Bogibeel bridges. SAIL's consistent involvement in such strategic initiatives solidifies its role as a key enabler in shaping India's future connectivity and economic growth.
