L&T Energy GreenTech Ltd, a subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro, will develop India's largest green hydrogen plant at IOCL's Panipat Refinery in Haryana. Operating under a build-own-operate model, the facility will supply 10,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually for 25 years, advancing India's National Green Hydrogen Mission. The project will use high-pressure alkaline electrolysers manufactured at L&T's Hazira facility, supporting the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. This marks a significant milestone in India's clean energy journey and underscores L&T's leadership in large-scale energy transition projects, setting the stage for broader green hydrogen adoption across key industrial sectors.
Larsen & Toubro (L&T) announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, L&T Energy GreenTech Ltd (LTEG), will develop India's largest green hydrogen plant. This project, located at Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL)'s Panipat Refinery in Haryana, underscores a major stride in the nation's energy transition efforts.
The facility, which will be developed under a build-own-operate (BOO) model, is slated to supply a substantial 10,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually to IOCL over a period of 25 years. This long-term commitment directly contributes to the Centre's overarching National Green Hydrogen Mission, approved by the Union Cabinet in January 2023 with a substantial outlay of INR 19,744 crore.
The project will utilize high-pressure alkaline electrolysers manufactured at L&T Electrolysers Ltd's state-of-the-art facility in Hazira, Gujarat, reflecting a strong emphasis on indigenous manufacturing under the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiative. L&T Electrolysers had previously commissioned its first indigenously manufactured electrolyser in Hazira in March 2024, marking its foray into domestic electrolyser production.
Subramanian Sarma, Deputy Managing Director & President of L&T, remarked that the decision to establish India's maiden green hydrogen plant validates the company's strategic vision to lead the nation's energy transition. He further added that this long-term project not only deepens their partnership with IOCL but also reinforces L&T's capability to deliver large-scale clean energy solutions, setting a precedent for industrial-scale adoption across various hard-to-abate sectors.
This pioneering move is expected to inspire further investments and developments in India's rapidly evolving green energy ecosystem.
