Synopsis

The Rajasthan government has approved a funding of INR 95 crore as its contribution toward the construction of the Renukaji and Lakhwar dams in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand respectively, under the Yamuna Water Agreement. These dams, part of a broader initiative in the upper Yamuna basin, are expected to enhance year-round water availability and support drinking water and irrigation needs in districts such as Churu, Sikar, and Jhunjhunu. The total project cost, as fixed by the Yamuna River Board, is INR 11,320.46 crore, with Rajasthan's full share amounting to INR 215.66 crore.

The Rajasthan government has sanctioned INR 95 crore as its financial share for ongoing construction works under the Yamuna Water Agreement, according to an official statement. This funding is part of the state's contribution toward the development of the Renukaji Dam in Himachal Pradesh and the Lakhwar Dam in Uttarakhand-both situated in the upper catchment of the Yamuna basin.

These projects are aimed at accelerating the construction process and ensuring timely water supply to Rajasthan. Once operational, the dams are expected to secure year-round water availability, significantly improving drinking water access and irrigation facilities in the state.

Chief Minister Shri Bhajan Lal Sharma remarked in the official communication that the state was prioritising water infrastructure with strategic planning and commitment. He added that the Yamuna Water Project would greatly benefit districts like Churu, Sikar, and Jhunjhunu, by creating lasting solutions for water scarcity in these arid regions.

Three key dams are currently being developed within the Yamuna basin in the neighbouring hill states, with construction progressing on the Renukaji and Lakhwar structures. As per figures provided by the Yamuna River Board, the total estimated cost for these initiatives stands at INR 11,320.46 crore. Rajasthan's share of this is pegged at INR 215.66 crore. The recent sanction of INR 95 crore reflects the state's commitment to active participation, addressing the board's financial requisitions.

In line with these developments, the third meeting of the task force tasked with ensuring Rajasthan's water share from the Hathini Kund Barrage was held in Panchkula. During this session, officials from Rajasthan and Haryana engaged in discussions across multiple operational and strategic matters tied to the inter-state water distribution.
