Synopsis

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu recently met Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari to seek immediate assistance for repairing and reconstructing roads damaged by flash floods. He highlighted the delays in National Highway projects, advocated for tunnelling in strategic areas, and pushed for inclusion of roads under the PM Gati Shakti Yojana. Sukhu also requested approval for additional ropeway projects to address traffic concerns. Separately, he briefed Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah about infrastructure losses exceeding INR 1,000 crore due to monsoon-triggered disasters, with total damages since 2023 amounting to nearly INR 21,000 crore.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu met Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi to seek immediate intervention for restoring road infrastructure severely impacted by flash floods in the state. During the meeting, CM Sukhu conveyed the scale of devastation and urged the Ministry to extend robust support for both repair and reconstruction efforts.

The Chief Minister asked the Centre to include a few key roads under the PM Gati Shakti Yojana and emphasized the urgency of reviving National Highway projects that have stalled due to various unresolved issues. He urged for swift resolution and resumption of work on these critical projects. CM Sukhu also suggested the adoption of tunnelling technology in National Highway construction, especially in hilly terrains, to improve long-term resilience and connectivity.

In addition, he raised the matter of roads of strategic importance, previously discussed with the Defence Ministry, and called for quick clearance and implementation. Stressing the need for decongesting traffic and boosting tourism, the Chief Minister requested the sanctioning of more ropeway projects for Himachal Pradesh.

Union Minister Gadkari assured full cooperation and directed officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the ministry to assess the situation and provide timely support. Present at the meeting were senior officials including MLA Sunder Singh Thakur, Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena, PWD Secretary Abhishek Jain, and Principal Resident Commissioner Sushil Kumar Singla.

On the same day, CM Sukhu also met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and conveyed that the state had already suffered infrastructure losses of around INR 1,000 crore just weeks into the monsoon season. He informed Shah about the extensive damage to essential public infrastructure including roads, bridges, buildings, irrigation channels, and power and water supply systems.

He further explained that such natural disasters have become frequent since 2023, leading to cumulative damages worth approximately INR 21,000 crore over three years. While the state government continues to extend relief using SDRF and NDRF funds, the Chief Minister highlighted that the repeated nature of disasters has severely strained the state's capacity to recover and rebuild without enhanced central support.
