Telangana has received INR 1,500 crore in Central funding under the PMAY-Urban 2.0 initiative, facilitating the construction of 1.13 lakh houses across the state. The sanctioned homes fall under the revived Indiramma urban housing scheme, which aims to deliver 20 lakh homes in five years. The approval makes Telangana the top beneficiary of PMAY-Urban 2.0, overtaking other major states. Beneficiaries will receive INR 5 lakh per unit, combining Central and state support. An additional proposal for rural housing is being finalised for future submission.
Telangana has secured INR 1,500 crore from the Central government for the construction of 1.13 lakh housing units under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) 2.0. These units will be built as part of the state's renewed Indiramma housing initiative, which targets economically weaker sections and lower-income urban families. With this allocation, Telangana now leads all Indian states in terms of number of sanctioned housing units under PMAY-Urban 2.0 surpassing larger and BJP-ruled states such as Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Bihar.
The sanctioned amount is part of a broader plan that envisions 20 lakh urban homes over a five-year horizon. The state government has already approved 2.5 lakh homes under the first phase of this plan, and construction is currently underway for over 1.5 lakh of them. Each eligible beneficiary will receive INR 5 lakh in financial support: INR 1.5 lakh from the Central government and INR 3.5 lakh from the Telangana government.
The funding was finalised after Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and senior officials from the state's housing department met with Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar in New Delhi. During this meeting, the Telangana delegation requested Central support for the complete 20 lakh homes planned under the urban Indiramma scheme. Sources in the housing department confirmed that Telangana's beneficiary details have now been uploaded to the Central government's housing portal a key prerequisite for disbursal of funds under PMAY.
The state government is also working on a proposal for rural housing, which will be submitted to the Centre once finalised. The official noted that given Telangana's swift progress in uploading beneficiary lists and initiating groundwork, they are optimistic about securing additional funds soon.
The revived Indiramma scheme, originally introduced during the Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy era in undivided Andhra Pradesh, has now been tailored for urban development in Telangana. Its reintroduction marks a major policy shift from the previous government, which had discontinued the housing programme. The current government has not only reinstated it but significantly expanded its scope.
