Indian Railways plans to install CCTV cameras in over 7,400 passenger coaches and 15,000 locomotives to enhance safety. The high-end cameras will provide clear footage at 100 kmph and in low light. Each coach will have four cameras, and locomotives will have six CCTVs and two microphones. Tenders were floated on July 11, with installation by Northern Railway workshops. This initiative, following a successful trial run, aims to deter miscreants, protect passenger privacy, and explore future AI integration for security.
Indian Railways has recently decided to install CCTV cameras in all its passenger coaches and locomotives. The decision was made during a review meeting. This initiative across India's vast railway network aims to improve safety and security for travelers by equipping thousands of coaches and locomotives with surveillance technology.
Over 7,400 coaches and approximately 15,000 locomotives will receive these CCTV cameras. The high-end cameras are designed to provide clear footage even at speeds of 100 kilometers per hour and in low-light conditions. To protect passenger privacy, these cameras will be placed in common movement areas near the doors of coaches.
Each railway coach will be equipped with four dome-type CCTV cameras, with two at each entrance. Locomotives will have six CCTVs- one each at the front, rear, left, and right sides (all outside), and one dome CCTV each at the front and rear inside. Additionally, locomotives will have two desk-mounted microphones. These cameras will be certified by the Standardization Testing and Quality Certification (STQC) directorate.
The decision was made during a review meeting led by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. A trial run for the project was successfully conducted in some coaches and locomotives in the Northern Railway. This trial led to a reduction in the number of cameras required per coach while still ensuring comprehensive coverage.
Tenders for the installation were floated on July 11. Three workshops in the Northern Railway-Jagadhri, Alambagh, and Charbagh-will carry out the task for different types of coaches. Currently, semi-high-speed trains like Vande Bharat, Tejas Express, and superfast train Amrit Bharat Express already have CCTV cameras installed. The Railways also plans to explore the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the captured CCTV data in collaboration with the IndiaAI mission.
