Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel has approved INR 212 crore for a new two-lane bridge over the Mahisagar river near Mujpur, Padra taluka. This decision comes five days after the collapse of a four-decade-old bridge at the same site, which claimed 20 lives on July 9. The new bridge, with an 18-month deadline, will be built parallel to the old one. The state government also distributed INR 62 lakh in financial aid to affected families, including INR 4 lakh for each of the 15 deceased. Search operations continue for one missing person.
Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel recently approved funds for the construction of a new bridge. This decision, impacting the Mahisagar river near Mujpur in Padra taluka, Gujarat, follows the collapse of an older bridge at the same site. The Chief Minister sanctioned a specific amount for the project.
The approval for INR 212 crore comes days after a portion of the four-decade-old Gambhira Bridge, spanning the Mahisagar river and connecting central Gujarat and Saurashtra regions, collapsed on the morning of July 9. This incident claimed the lives of 20 people, with several vehicles falling into the river.
The new bridge will be a two-lane high-level structure, built parallel to the collapsed structure. It will connect Padra and Anklav in Vadodara and Anand districts respectively. The project has been granted administrative sanction, and the tendering process has already begun. Officials at the Chief Minister's Office stated the project is scheduled to be completed in 18 months.
On Sunday, the state government distributed INR 62 lakh in financial assistance to those affected by the tragedy. Officials stated that INR 4 lakh was given to the families of the 15 deceased, whose verifications and other formalities were concluded.
Additionally, four individuals who were hurt in the incident received INR 50,000 each. Chhota Udepur MP Jasubhai Rathva and Padra MLA Chaitanyasinh Zala handed over the cheques. Search and rescue operations continued at the site on Sunday to locate one missing person, Vikram Padhiyar, aged 22, a resident of Narsinghpur village in Anand district.
An official stated that the operation is being conducted along the river's upstream and downstream stretches, utilizing rubber boats and other equipment. The wreckage of small vehicles involved in the incident has been recovered. Bridge collapses, especially those involving older structures, often highlight the need for infrastructure audits and timely replacement.
