JSW Infrastructure has secured a letter of award from the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority for a port development project worth INR 740 crore at Netaji Subhas Dock in Kolkata. The project entails reconstructing berth 8 and mechanising berth 7 under a 30-year DBFOT concession within the PPP framework. With a two-year construction schedule, JSW Infrastructure will also commence operations during the build phase. The project will expand the company's container handling capacity, aligning with its broader strategy to strengthen presence on both eastern and western coastlines through the government's port privatisation scheme.
JSW Infrastructure has received a letter of award from the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority for the development of container facilities at the Netaji Subhas Dock in Kolkata. The INR 740 crore initiative involves reconstruction of berth 8 and mechanisation of berth 7. The company announced that the project has been granted on a build, finance, operate, and transfer (DBFOT) basis under the public-private partnership model and is accompanied by a 30-year concession.
The infrastructure major confirmed that operations are expected to begin even during the construction period, aided by stable cargo volumes in Kolkata. The overall construction is scheduled to conclude within two years. Once operational, the facility is expected to significantly improve both capacity and operational efficiency.
JSW Infrastructure viewed this development as a milestone in its ongoing plan to diversify its cargo portfolio by increasing its investment in the container segment. The company stated that this strategic addition will enhance container operations not only on the eastern seaboard but also complement developments on the western coast.
On the western front, JSW Infrastructure currently operates the New Mangalore Container Terminal, which has a handling capacity of 0.2 million TEUs. Expansion plans are already underway to take that figure up to 0.35 million TEUs. This latest Kolkata project is expected to push the group?s total container handling capacity to nearly 1 million TEUs across both coastlines.
By securing a strategically significant terminal in eastern India, the company is positioning itself to handle growing container traffic on both coasts.
