The Union Minister of Agriculture, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, announced that nearly 500,000 homeless individuals in Jammu and Kashmir will soon receive homes under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana after beneficiary verification completes. Alongside, a INR 150 crore Clean Plant Centre will be built in Srinagar to ensure pathogen-free horticulture stock, with additional labs for saffron, soil, and fertilizer quality. Support is being extended to farmers via PM-KISAN, crop insurance mapping, ICAR-backed regional centers and infrastructure upgrades. Women in rural areas are seeing rising incomes, with many crossing INR 1?lakh and even INR 10?lakh annually.
Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan recently revealed that nearly half a million homeless residents in Jammu and Kashmir have been identified for new housing under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, with 93 per cent of homes already built and the rest set to be allotted following final verification. The emphasis on verification aims to ensure fair distribution.
The minister underscored that Shri PM Narendra Modi's vision of a developed India includes Jammu and Kashmir, where agriculture still supports almost half the population pib.gov.in. He praised the Kisan Khidmat Ghar service centres and pledged that farmers with land allotments but no documentation will soon be included in the PM-KISAN direct cash transfer scheme. Plans are also underway to map horticulture crops for inclusion in a revamped weather-based crop insurance initiative.
Chouhan flagged an issue with imported plant materials succumbing to diseases in orchards after a few years. To address this, the government is investing INR 150 crore in a Clean Plant Centre in Srinagar, which will produce clean, virus-free saplings of apples, almonds, walnuts and berries, while supporting private nurseries.
He also shared that the National Saffron Mission will receive a boost through a tissue culture lab and nursery, along with new quality labs in Kathua, Baramulla and Anantnag to enhance soil and fertilizer standards. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research will help set up a Regional Horticulture Centre at Jammu Agricultural University, while cold storage for horticulture produce will be subsidised up to 5,000?MT capacity pib.gov.in.
On rural welfare, Chouhan highlighted that many women are now "Lakhpati Didis" earning over INR 1 lakh, and the next wave includes "Millionaire Didis" earning 10 lakh annually under NRLM schemes. A booklet celebrating their success was released. MGNREGA work targets are being set and youth skill programmes are rolling out, while efforts continue to connect more farmers with Kisan Credit Cards.
Regarding connectivity, Chouhan recalled PM Modi's announcement of INR 4,200 crore for the next phase of rural roads under PMGSY and said work on remaining segments will begin soon.
