Madhya Pradesh's chief minister has directed officials to prepare an action plan for expanding affordable housing with a focus on socio-economic needs to curb slum growth. He emphasized green spaces in all housing projects and enforcement against illegal developments near Bhopal's Upper Lake. Key plans include engaging top builders, launching a proposed "Namo Train" intra-city rail, and prioritizing homes for women under the Ladli Behnas scheme. Other initiatives include modern laundry services for self-help groups, extending the Deendayal Rasoi Yojana, and converting reserved land into "Nagar Vans." An INR 2,800 crore plan for developing religious towns like Chitrakoot is also in progress, alongside efforts to boost housing density.
Madhya Pradesh's chief minister convened a high-level review of the Urban Development and Housing Department earlier this week and instructed officials to draft an action plan aimed at expanding affordable and practical housing across urban centres, with careful regard for residents'socio-economic circumstances to stem slum growth.
He stressed that every housing project, whether by development authorities or the Housing Board, must incorporate parks and green cover as part of environmental improvement efforts. A detailed survey of illegal developments near Bhopal's Upper Lake followed, with orders issued for swift enforcement action.
In urban expansion, he advocated engaging reputed national builders and colonisers to uplift colony developments while also calling for an upgrade of fire services to better handle emergencies in both city and industrial zones.
A proposal to launch an intra-city rail service dubbed "Namo Train" was put forward, and officials have been tasked with initiating discussions with the union railway ministry. The CM also called for prioritising home allocation to women under the Ladli Behnas scheme, and directed municipal bodies to improve organized spaces for meat and fish vendors.
He pointed to extending the Deendayal Rasoi Yojana at religious sites through collaboration with NGOs and donors, and emphasised supporting urban self?help groups to launch modern laundry services by provisioning funding and space.
Further, he mandated immediate allotments for completed Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) and similar scheme houses once ownership documentation is finalised. Additionally, he encouraged converting reserved city-land into "Nagar Vans" and urged authorities to clarify maintenance tasks.
The state's Urban Development Minister also revealed that plans are underway for an integrated development strategy focused on religious and tourist towns, including Chitrakoot. A INR 2,800 crore master plan with INR 800 crore earmarked for a detailed report is in progress. The Housing Board has been directed to study redevelopment opportunities to increase housing density.
This initiative aligns with earlier urban priorities in the state budget that allocated significant resources to housing for the urban poor and redevelopment projects. The CM's ongoing push follows past announcements such as the "Sampada-2" platform for e-registration and combining nearby urban areas into larger metropolitan bodies .
