Thrissur, Kerala's cultural heartland, is undergoing a significant transformation with infrastructure projects totaling over INR 4,000 crore. These initiatives span transportation, tourism, technology, and urban development, aiming to enhance connectivity, boost the economy, and improve residents' quality of life. Key projects include the Thrissur Skywalk, Puthur Zoological Park, Infopark expansion, and the Thrissur-Kuttippuram Road upgrade. One of the standout developments is the Thrissur Skywalk, inaugurated in August 2023. This 279-meter-long circular pedestrian bridge, constructed at a cost of INR 8 crore under the AMRUT scheme, connects four major roads in Sakthan Thampuran Nagar. The structure, elevated six meters above ground, features lifts and air conditioning, providing safe and comfortable passage for pedestrians.
In the realm of transportation, the Thrissur-Kuttippuram Road is undergoing significant upgrades. As part of the Rebuild Kerala Initiative, this 33.24 km stretch is being rehabilitated at a cost of INR 181.37 crore. The project aims to improve road quality and reduce travel time between key districts.
The city is also enhancing its technological landscape with the expansion of Infopark Thrissur. Located in Koratty, this IT park operates under the 'Hub and Spoke Model' and has been granted Special Economic Zone status. The park currently houses 29 companies and employs around 700 individuals, with plans for further growth.
Tourism and conservation efforts are highlighted by the development of the Thrissur Zoological Park in Puthur. Spanning 336 acres, this project is set to be India's first designer zoo, with an estimated cost between INR 300 to INR 350 crore. The park aims to recreate natural habitats for animals, enhancing both conservation and visitor experience.
Agricultural advancements are also on the agenda with the Thrissur-Ponnani Kole Development Project. This three-phase initiative covers 13,500 hectares of paddy fields, aiming to increase yield from 3-4 tonnes per hectare to 7-8 tonnes. The project, with an outlay of INR 220 crore, is expected to boost local agriculture and food security.
In terms of urban planning, Thrissur's Master Plan 2039 outlines a vision for sustainable development. The plan includes proposals for improved transportation networks, land use optimization, and the creation of vehicle-free zones to enhance livability.
Additionally, the city is set to benefit from the construction of road overbridges (ROBs) at level crossings. Southern Railway has committed to fully funding 55 ROBs across Kerala, with several planned in Thrissur district. Eighteen of these have already received INR 95 crore for land acquisition, aiming to improve safety and traffic flow.
These comprehensive infrastructure projects reflect Thrissur's commitment to balanced and inclusive growth. By investing in transportation, technology, tourism, agriculture, and urban planning, the city is setting a precedent for sustainable development in Kerala and beyond.
