Synopsis

Kollam is undergoing a major infrastructure upgrade with projects worth over INR 500 crore enhancing connectivity, tourism, and public services. The INR 352 crore Kollam Bypass and INR 63 crore Asramam Link Road are easing city traffic, while a new bridge and coastal road aim to decongest NH-66. Adventure tourism at Maruthimala and a new sea-view park are set to boost visitor footfall. A INR 39 crore sports complex and upcoming IT park promise economic and employment growth. Police station and housing upgrades are also underway. These developments mark Kollam's emergence as a key urban and economic hub in Kerala's evolving growth strategy.

Kollam, nestled along Kerala's picturesque coastline, is witnessing a transformative phase with a slew of infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing connectivity, boosting tourism, and fostering economic growth. These initiatives, backed by substantial investments, are set to redefine the city's landscape and prospects.

Inaugurated in January 2019, the 13.14 km Kollam Bypass alleviates traffic congestion by diverting vehicles away from the city center. Constructed at a cost of INR 352 crore, this two-lane stretch includes three major bridges over the Ashtamudi Lake, enhancing travel efficiency between Alappuzha and Thiruvananthapuram.

A critical urban project, the Asramam Link Road aims to decongest city traffic by providing an alternative route. The third phase, costing INR 63 crore, involves constructing a new bridge over the Kollam Canal, further improving intra-city connectivity. Spanning 14.1 km, this scenic coastal road connects Chinnakada to Paravur, passing through key suburbs. Once completed, it will serve as a vital bypass, easing traffic on the congested NH-66 stretch.

Recognizing the potential of eco-tourism, the government has allocated INR 3.5 crore for developing adventure tourism facilities at Maruthimala. Plans include rock-climbing areas, viewing decks, and other amenities to attract tourists and boost local employment.

Opened in April 2023, this 2.5-acre park offers panoramic views of the Arabian Sea, featuring a children's playground, boating lake, and an open-air auditorium. It's a significant addition to Kollam's coastal attractions.

To bolster the IT sector, an IT park is being developed on land owned by the Kollam Corporation. This project, a collaboration between KIIFB, KINFRA, and the corporation, aims to be operational by 2025-26, providing a significant boost to the local economy.
