The Bhayanderpada Flyover on Ghodbunder Road, a critical infrastructure project aimed at alleviating traffic congestion and enhancing connectivity, was inaugurated earlier this week by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Shri Eknath Shinde. The flyover, constructed atop the viaduct of Metro Lines 4 and 4A, integrates road and metro systems for optimal land use. It is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion on Ghodbunder Road, a major freight corridor connecting Thane to Bhiwandi, Navi Mumbai, Vasai-Virar, and Gujarat. The project, which includes a dedicated underpass for pedestrians and local vehicles, is anticipated to streamline traffic flow, cut travel time, and improve safety for daily commuters.
Shri Eknath Shinde, the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, officially opened the Bhayanderpada Flyover on Ghodbunder Road earlier this week, completing an important infrastructure project aimed at reducing traffic on one of Thane's busiest thoroughfares. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik and senior officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
The newly constructed flyover, strategically built atop the viaduct of Metro Lines 4 and 4A, is aimed at optimising land usage and integrating road and metro systems. Once metro services commence, residents will have direct access to metro stations, facilitating faster and more efficient transit across the region.
The Bhayanderpada Flyover features a total ramp length of 601 metres, consisting of the Thane end at 391.48 metres, the underpass spanning 20.4 metres, and the Borivali end measuring 189.88 metres. The carriageway is configured as a 2+2 lane setup, each lane being 7.5 metres wide. The underpass comprises two lanes in each direction, with a length of 20.4 metres and a width of 19.7 metres. The flyover is engineered to accommodate an estimated traffic volume of approximately 73,333 Passenger Car Units (PCUs).
The flyover is expected to provide substantial relief from traffic congestion along Ghodbunder Road, which serves as a vital interstate freight corridor from Gujarat to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT). The reduction in congestion between Gaimukh and Waghbil is anticipated to enhance traffic flow and reduce travel time for vehicles commuting between Thane, Bhiwandi, Navi Mumbai, Borivali, Vasai-Virar, and Gujarat.
Additionally, the flyover is expected to ease the traffic burden caused by heavy goods vehicles and daily office commuters, improving the overall average driving speed on this arterial route.
Impact on Local Residents: Local residents in areas such as Thane East, Ghodbunder Road, Gaimukh, Kasarvadavali, Brahmand, Waghbil, and Bhayanderpada are set to benefit significantly from the new flyover, as it will reduce travel time and enhance overall traffic management in the region. Additionally, a dedicated underpass constructed beneath the flyover will enable pedestrians and local vehicles to safely cross both sides of Ghodbunder Road, alleviating pressure on the main carriageway and minimising bottlenecks.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed that the Bhayanderpada Flyover is not merely an infrastructure project but a transformative step towards improving the quality of life for Thane residents. He stated that the project would act as a catalyst for regional development by reducing traffic congestion, saving both time and fuel.
Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA, highlighted that the Bhayanderpada Flyover and underpass mark a significant milestone in the creation of a sustainable and efficient transport system in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. He emphasised that the project is designed to not only improve traffic flow but also boost economic and industrial activity by facilitating quicker commutes and safer travel.
By integrating road and metro systems, the project exemplifies a forward-thinking approach to infrastructure development, aiming to reduce congestion, minimise travel time, and promote safer commuting experiences. As metro services are set to commence in the near future, the Bhayanderpada Flyover stands as a crucial component of Thane's evolving urban transit network.
