Colt Data Centre Services (Colt DCS) has commenced the development of its second data centre in France, Colt Paris 2, as part of its extensive investment in the country's digital infrastructure. The new facility is the first of five data centres planned across two sites, aimed at expanding Colt DCS' total capacity to 170MW by 2031. The initiative is backed by a EUR 2.3 billion investment and prioritises sustainable construction practices, including a hybrid cooling system that produces zero water waste and the use of 100% renewable power. Furthermore, Colt Paris 2 will utilise waste heat recovery for the benefit of the local community while also creating over 100 jobs once operational.
Colt Data Centre Services (Colt DCS) has commenced the construction of its second data centre in France, referred to as Colt Paris 2. This facility is the first of three planned data centres to be developed on a 12.5-acre site in Villebon-sur-Yvette, located southwest of Paris. Additionally, two more data centres, Colt Paris 5 and 6, are scheduled for construction on a separate 5.3-acre site in Les Ulis, situated near Colt DCS' existing operational facility.
The initiative is part of a EUR 2.3 billion investment in France's digital economy, targeting the completion of five data centres by 2031, collectively increasing the company's capacity to 170MW. These new facilities will adhere to Colt DCS' Global Reference Design (GRD), incorporating sustainable building practices that include the use of low embodied carbon materials. The centres will cater to large enterprises, traditional cloud services, and artificial intelligence (AI) platforms, furthering the company's role in advancing the digital landscape across France and Europe.
At Colt Paris 2, a hybrid cooling approach will be implemented, combining traditional air cooling with liquid-to-chip technology to efficiently manage high-density AI workloads while ensuring zero water waste. Additionally, the facility has been designed to recover waste heat, which will be repurposed for use by the local community. Once fully operational, Colt Paris 2 is expected to provide 40MW of IT power with the capacity to handle over 100kW per cabinet, leveraging 100% renewable power agreements.
Niclas Sanfridsson, CEO of Colt DCS, conveyed that the development of Colt Paris 2 marks a significant step in the company's long-term strategy for France, highlighting its commitment to sustainable growth and innovation. He stated that the project not only implements innovative design principles but also underlines the company's dedication to environmental responsibility by investing in renewable energy contracts and integrating waste heat reuse systems.
During the construction phase, the project is expected to employ approximately 300 individuals, with over 100 permanent positions anticipated upon completion. The initiative underscores Colt DCS' ongoing efforts to position itself as a reliable data centre partner, facilitating AI-driven solutions in a secure and sustainable operational environment.
The project is also poised to support the local economy, creating job opportunities and contributing to the broader digital transformation across France and Europe. Furthermore, the integration of waste heat recovery systems exemplifies the company's innovative approach to aligning digital infrastructure development with community welfare and sustainability objectives.
